This chapter is about the grammatical knowledge of Past Perfect Tense and Past Perfect Progressive Tense. I was a little puzzled when reading the “Grammar Extra” part at the bottom. The underlined sentence in yellow says that PAST PERFECT TENSE should be used when you describing things that didn’t happen as expected. The two examples given below are both the case. But the second example isn’t Past Perfect Tense but Past Perfect Progressive Tense. It’s not consistent as mentioned above, is it? 😲 In addition, “hope” is a state verb, and the above underlined sentence in pink circle & yellow line says that state verbs usually don’t have a progressive tense. So is “had been hoping” in the second example I’ve just mentioned a special case here?😳 A few days ago, I posted a moment in which there are example sentences didn’t have corresponding the knowledge point. Is it a problem with this book? Whereas this is the official IELTS grammar book published by Cambridge and so many experts have recommended it, I really have to doubt myself.😥
