So far, I've been mostly drilling hiragana and katakana, with Duolingo helping with basic words and grammar. Next week, things get a bit more formalised as I'll be starting a self-teaching GENKI course. This is GENKI 1, designed to help preparation for JLPT N5. I still think spending the first two weeks learning hiragana and katakana were the right choice and I'll still need to do a lot of practice to get more proficient, but things are moving in the right direction.
