It’s because of their history. A lot of these words come from Latin, the language people spoke in the Roman Empire. Over time Latin changed and became the Romance languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian these languages kept many words that sound alike, especially the ones ending in -ción or -tion Later, after the Norman conquest in the 11th century English borrowed a lot of words from French, which also comes from Latin. So even though English isn’t a Romance language, it still got many Latin-based words through French That’s why today languages like Spanish, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian have lots of similar words especially those ending in -ción, -tion, -zione, -ção, or -țiune And it doesn’t stop there. Other languages like German, Dutch, Russian, and even Arabic in some places also took words from Latin or French, mostly about science, politics, and culture.
