Indigenous culture is a very important aspect of Canadian culture and identity. Indigenous peoples are the original inhabitants of Canada. Contrary to popular belief, in North America, we live on Indigenous land. In Canada, there are over 630 First Nations communities and 50 Indigenous languages, including Cree, Ojibwe, Inuktitut, Mi'kmaq, Mohawk, and Blackfoot, among many others. Indigenous traditions remain strong today through powwows, storytelling, smudging ceremonies, and deep connections to the land. A powwow is a celebration of Indigenous culture, community, and identity. It is an event where we share music, dance, food, crafts, and celebrate family and unity. In Toronto, powwows are one of our cultural traditions that we celebrate annually at schools, communities, or large public events in the city centre where professional Indigenous artists perform.
