⸻ When traveling with my family, the first thing we consider is the hotel. We’re not really fond of the nostalgic Showa-era style, and we tend to avoid traditional onsen towns. Ideally, we hope to find a renovated place with few large tour groups, and if there’s an art museum nearby, that’s a big plus. And one thing we absolutely can’t compromise on is a good bar. We often choose destinations with onsen , but a quick soak is enough for us — what we really look forward to is dinner, drinks, and the bar. We travel with my elderly mother, who has been all over Japan and abroad. Even at her age, she gracefully uses a knife and fork and enjoys wine when it’s served. While dining, we sometimes see people her age having their food cut into small pieces to make it easier to eat. When I see that, I can’t help but feel grateful that my mother is still so independent — it makes traveling with her so easy and enjoyable. On this trip as well, we found a wonderful bar. There was a very handsome and pleasant young man working there — probably around the same age as my children. While many of the restaurant staff spoke with regional accents, he spoke beautiful standard Japanese with no hint of a dialect. He said he tries to hide his accent. When he smiled, he was truly charming, and we thoroughly enjoyed both the delicious drinks and the conversation with him. 家族で旅行する時に一番に考慮するのはホテル。 私たちは昭和レトロはあまり好みではない。それと温泉街も避ける。どちらかといえばリノベーションされた団体客の少ない近くに美術館があるところを見つけたらラッキー。 そしてはずせないのがバー。 温泉があるところに行くのだけど温泉にはさっと入れば十分で何より夕食とお酒そしてバーです。 年老いた母がいるが国内外多く旅している彼女はその年齢でもナイフとフォークを優雅に使いワインも注がれるままに飲む。周りを見ると食べやすく小さくほぐしてもらってる同年代の方を見かけた。それを見ると自立している母の世話はとても楽だと幸せを感じられずにはいられない。 今回の旅でも素敵なバーがあった。とてもイケメンで感じの良い若いバーテンダーがいた。子供達と同じ年齢ぐらいかな。レストランでは方言のスタッフが多くいたが彼は全く訛っておらず美しい標準語を話していた。方言を隠しているとか。笑うと本当に可愛い子で、おいしいお酒と彼との会話を私たちは楽しんだ。
