Two Soldiers traveling together were set upon by a Robber. The one fled away; the other stood his ground and defended himself with his stout right hand. The Robber being slain, the timid companion ran up and drew his sword, and then, throwing back his traveling cloak said, “I’ll at him, and I’ll take care he shall learn whom he has attacked.”On this, he who had fought with the Robber made answer, “I only wish that you had helped me just now, even if it had been only with those words, for I should have been the more encouraged, believing them to be true; but now put up your sword in its sheath and hold your equally useless tongue, till you can deceive others who do not know you. I, indeed, who have experienced with what speed you run away, know right well that no dependence can be placed on your valor.” 两个士兵一起旅行，路上遭遇一个抢匪袭击。一个士兵逃走了；另一个士兵则站在原地，用他结实的右手自卫。抢匪被杀死后，那个胆小的士兵跑了回来。他拔出剑，然后将行军外衣抛到身后，说道：“让我来对付他，我要让他知道他刚才袭击的是什么人。”这时候，刚才与抢匪奋战的那位士兵说道：“我只希望你刚才能帮帮我，即使只在一旁说一些刚才那样的话也好，因为我会相信那些话都是真的，可能会更受鼓舞。但是现在，把你的剑收回到鞘里吧，并且管好你同样无用的舌头，留着去欺骗那些不了解你的人吧。而我，确实亲眼见证了你逃跑的速度有多么快，十分清楚你的英勇是不可靠的。”
