At that time, I had the chance to see the paintings of the great Chinese master Zhang Dai-chien — some of the most incredible works I’ve ever seen. What many people don’t know is that Zhang Dai-chien, considered the greatest Chinese painter of the last century, lived in Brazil for about 20 years, in the countryside of São Paulo, in a town called Mogi das Cruzes, before moving to Taipei. He built a rural estate surrounded by nature, which included a “Garden of the Eight Virtues,” inspired by Chinese culture. It was eventually flooded by a dam, which led him to leave Brazil in 1970. Even after moving away, he continued to refer to Brazil as his “second home.”
