But on that humble island, something extraordinary was built… a tower that later became a legend passed down through the ages. This tower was not just a building; it was a lighthouse, guiding ships in the dark sea, directing sailors to the city's harbor, and warning of approaching enemies. The structure rose majestically, reaching a height of nearly or even exceeding 100 meters. Its fame became a symbol of every lighthouse on earth. From the name of the island, "Pharos," the word "phare" in French and "lighthouse" in English are derived, and its influence remains in languages to this day. This was the Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is believed that the Ptolemaic king ordered its construction, and he commissioned the brilliant engineer Sostratus of Cnidus to build it. But the story doesn't end with engineering and grandeur... Legend says that Sostratus, despite his obedience to the king's orders, wanted to immortalize his name forever. So he engraved his real name on the lighthouse stone, then covered it with a layer of plaster, over which he wrote the king's name. Years passed... and the plaster faded... but the original name remained clearly visible: "Sostratus, son of Desiphanes, dedicates this edifice to the Savior Gods for the safety of sailors." Thus, the tower not only illuminated the paths of sailors, but also illuminated a name that would never be forgotten. ## Images 1.
