The tradition of lighting oil lamps (pelita) during Hari Raya @ eid fitr in Malaysia is deeply rooted in Malay and Islamic culture, but it also carries elements of local influence that have evolved over time. In Islam, light is often associated with goodness and blessings. Therefore, during Ramadan and in the lead-up to Syawal, the glow of oil lamps symbolizes joy in welcoming the day of victory after a month of fasting. Additionally, before the advent of electricity, the Malay community used oil lamps or kerosene lanterns to illuminate their homes and pathways. During festive seasons, houses lit with oil lamps created a lively and welcoming atmosphere for guests. Some scholars also suggest that this tradition may have traces of influence from Hindu-Buddhist culture, which also incorporates light in religious rituals and celebrations.

In the context of Hari Raya @ eid fitr, lighting oil lamps symbolizes joy and prosperity. It also reflects the spirit of togetherness, as families and neighbors often light the lamps together. Traditionally, oil lamps were made from bamboo or tin containers filled with kerosene and wicks, but today, electric or LED lamps are more commonly used. While the practice has declined in urban areas due to the availability of electric lighting and safety concerns, it remains a cherished tradition in rural villages, particularly during events like Malam Tujuh Likur (the last ten nights of Ramadan).

Overall, the tradition of lighting oil lamps is not merely a decorative element but holds deep symbolic meaning in Malay-Islamic culture in Malaysia. It represents the light of victory, joy, and communal spirit. Although it has evolved with time, this tradition continues to play a role in enlivening the Hari Raya (Eid fitr) atmosphere, especially in rural areas.
