Being deeply interested in nature, they were strolling through the village when a local approached them and said: "Do you know why there are so many clover flowers in our village? It's because we have a lot of cats! Wherever there are many cats, clover flowers grow in abundance." However, this curious and skeptical person was not convinced by such an explanation. They decided to investigate whether there was truly a connection between the number of cats and the abundance of clover flowers. After some research, they discovered that many beehives were built into the village’s mudbrick walls. Bees played a crucial role in pollination, which directly impacted the growth of clover flowers. However, mice posed a serious threat to the beehives, as they could damage them and reduce the bee population. Interestingly, the large number of cats in the village kept the mouse population under control. As a result, the beehives remained safe, allowing bees to collect nectar and continue pollination, leading to an increase in clover flowers. In reality, the presence of cats indirectly influenced the number of clover flowers, but not in the way the villager had assumed. This story illustrates how the human mind tends to find cause-and-effect relationships between events, even when no direct link exists. This cognitive bias is known as "illusory correlation." Such errors in thinking can lead us to false beliefs, superstitions, or even conspiracy theories.
