In elevators, on the street, or in parks, people avoid eye contact, remain silent, and rarely show friendliness. Unlike Western countries where casual greetings are normal, this silence in China reveals a deeper problem: a widespread lack of trust among strangers. This creates a cold and distant public atmosphere. A smile may be misunderstood. Helping a stranger, like an elderly person who falls, can lead to being blamed or scammed. So people choose to stay silent, to stay safe. One major reason is rapid urbanization. As millions moved to cities, old communities broke apart. People now live near strangers, not neighbors. But the bigger problem lies in fear. Decades ago , scams and child abduction cases have made headlines. Stories of “fake accidents” and human traffickers have taught people to be cautious. Helping the wrong person could ruin your life. Civic education is also lacking. Schools and society rarely teach empathy, communication, or public responsibility. Instead, people grow up learning to protect themselves first. Being distant becomes a form of self-defense. At its core, this silence reflects a society filled with insecurity. When trust is lost again and again, people stop giving others the benefit of the doubt.
