I’m not only a Japanese speaker but also a Japanese sign language signer. I have two characters, me speaking Japanese and signing JSL. This fact may cause something interesting things and phenomena. During reading Japanese books, I really image several things. Firstly, I can hear voices from my mouth reading texts of books inside head. However, voices sometimes changes sign. I intermittently imagine me or another deaf man doing hand sign translated from the text on the stage in the spotlight like standup comedy. Finally, I imagine the drama reflected from the text. Unlike speaking words, sign languages contain much visual information such as motion, velocity, emotion. However, he is not an actor of the drama of novels. So that’s in middle of between reading and drama. As soon as I hear my voice, a signer appears in front of me and does sign language on the stage.As I focus on watching his hand’s dance, it generates the smoke and then the movie fades in. Movie part and signer part take turns to express what I read. Anyway, my imagining process during reading books is complexed. But when I read English books, such things don’t happen because I don’t know ASL well. I just imagine me speaking English from books and make movies inside my head. So I’m curious about how different both reading JP books and EN books are.
