The food diary continues... actually this place is excellent but maybe it’s a little too Melbourne, a little too ironic or clever. Down the alleyway behind a petrol station next to the garbage truck and some bins? Oh well, just enjoy a dirty chai.

Later on I went to a Japanese cafe and enjoyed an interesting conversation with the staff. I ordered in Japanese, and it ruined the carefree atmosphere immediately - I feel as though I trapped them in formality by using Japanese. Maybe I think too much, but maybe the waitress disliked Japanese culture and was unhappy to be reminded.

@mk thanks for the corrections!! Yes we say petrol, or fuel for what Americans call gasoline. We also say petrol station and service station, or more likely just shorten it to servo. The tea was great 😊

@Thomas Ahh !! Fuel!! I never heard that “servo “ That’s interesting 😊 Thanks new information 😃 I visited Melbourne once , the city was beautiful 😃 If I have a chance I would try the Japanese cafe!

@Satoko yes! actually in English the word has a very specialised meaning related to pleasant or savoury flavours I think, not just mushrooms... it’s interesting when words change language!

@mk always glad to share new information! ℹ️ A year ago I was blind to many Japanese things in Melbourne but since I start learning 6 months ago, they are everywhere!

@Thomas hmmm so “umami mushroom” is already common to even Australian people even if they cannot speak Japanese?

@Satoko I think maybe many people who eat at this style of cafe know, but it’s very trendy. I don’t think most people know the word... do all Japanese people know and use this word?

@Thomas oh i see :) Yeah I think all Japanese know & use “umami” but it’s noun so “umami mushroom “ sound a little weird for Japanese.
