Do you mind if someone takes a picture of you in a public place

without asking for your permission?

I took a lot of pictures/videos in Japan and it shows a lot of people passing by. I wonder sometimes if those people look at the camera 📷 and feel that i’m being disrespectful.

What do you think?

From my personal point of view, some think as disrespectful. While as long as their faces are not in photos, might be ok. It really depends especially in ages.

@Esraa But don’t you think that everyone can see you in a public place anyways? So what’s the difference if someone took a general picture for the place and you were passing by and accidentally appeared in the picture/video? People already can see you in a public place.

It depends on the individual. As far as I am concerned, I think the photos you sent in it are acceptable.as long as the camera is not shooting the front face of the person, I think it is acceptable. This is my personal opinion.

@T.O But if I want to take a picture in a train station 🚉 for example. There are hundreds of people passing by and it’s hard not to show all faces.

@Aiden if it was accidentally and my not appear it's ok if you mean to do that it's not your right

@A.H So what if that person was not focusing the camera 📷 on you. They were just shooting a video and you passed by and appeared in it for a second. Would that be okay?

@Aiden i will not be comfortable to see myself in a picture by someone I don’t know. But some people will be open to take their pictures if you blurred their faces

@小叮当 The photos attached to this post are screenshots from a video that shows some people faces from the front. So it depends on the angle of the picture whether it’s ok or not?

@Aiden when I take photos in Japan, I try not to focus specific people. And yes, it's difficult to exclude all the faces but in random places like train stations I think it's ok. When it comes to smaller places like small restaurants, should be more careful.

@T.O But what is the difference between a train station and a restaurant? Both are public places, or it depends on the size of the place?

@小叮当 So what exactly is the right angle? 30 degrees? 90 degrees?

@Aiden I'm not sure about this. Maybe both are Okay . I think people don't care too much about it when they know you are just want to shoot a scene. On the contrary, when you are shooting a certain scene, people will take the initiative to avoid it, so that you can take the whole thing.

I have the same question about this when I took pics in a public place ,because I've met some awkward things before like someone they don't want to appear in my picture which makes me feel sorry and embarrassed,so I've been always want to figure out How to take photos in a public place if I want to capture some great moment that cannot be short of some passerby,How can we do that

@小叮当 It is a very admirable thing to do in many countries when people give you some space to finish filming. Much respect to those people. 🙏🏻

@Estrella Every country has it’s own law, but in most of western countries, it’s legal to take a picture of someone and post it online without their permission as long as it’s taken on public property (parks - shopping malls ..)

for me i don't like the idea of being in anonymous pictures posted somewhere. at least people who take these general pictures should blur the faces or put a sticker on them before posting if the faces are so clear, just out of respect.
