Idiom of the Day:

“Build a bridge, and get over it.”

In the

US, we will tell each other to “get over it” when bad things happen to us. It is inevitable that bad things happen in life. Yet, it is hard to let go sometimes. If we need to come to a resolution with our feelings about something, we might encourage each other more strongly by saying, “build a bridge and get over it.” These words can sometimes be harsh for others to hear. This is similar in meaning to the famous Disney song “Let It Go.”

    @Lana 𓆝 I disagree with your assessment of yourself. Sometimes you can be your own worst critic. And all the more since you are a teacher. We teachers tend to be hardest on ourselves while giving our students leniency. 😂😂 If you are a teacher, I am happy to help you more directly if you would like to send me a message. Please specifically state how I can help you with your students and instruction. But I will also help you with your pronunciation, etc. as well if you’d like that. Just be patient. I have so many people who send me messages every day. 😂😊

    @Judy this is not bad. But I think you need to work a little more on your “th” sounds. https://youtu.be/SVOnAI8ktKY

    @Scott Cecil Allen i know, I just see the 'bridge' thing,so I thought of the phrase. Huge fan of bridge I am !😄😄😄😄😄

    @Scott Cecil Allen ahh! I thought you slowed down for language learners 😂
  • Scott Cecil Allen Lifetime VIP

    @Jupiter this is not quite the same meaning. Your idiom is stating that, “If a hypothetical situation comes, we will deal with it in that moment - if it comes at all.” “Get over it” is releasing the emotions attached to something that is bothering you. “My ex-wife had an affair with her boss. I was very angry with her, but now I got over it by filing for divorce.” It is more like this.

    @Jᵉʰᵉᵉ very good!

    @Lana 𓆝 For me, this is normal speed. I try not to slow down my speech so that my listeners can practice at full speed. I do not like to talk fast either, as meanings can be missed by speaking too fast. I like to be understood completely, not partially.

    @Jumana very nice!
  • Judy

    It can encourage a broken heart especially for a woman who is crossed in loves. Take another song “stronger” for instance, it shows the similar meaning. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.😊
  • Jupiter

    We will cross the bridge when we come to it.

    Could you please read this post one more time with a normal speed? Thank you 😊
  • W.

    Thanks. Now the term get over it makes sense.
