This a a very common mistake I see when talking to Chinese people

A lot of people say, "Can I make friends with you?"

This is actually not correct.

The way to say it is, "Can I be friends with you?"

If you say 'make' instead of 'be', we will still understand what you are saying, but it sounds very unnatural.
