Idiom of the Day

“Fall off the wagon”

If you have “fallen off

the wagon,” you have given up on an endeavor that takes time to master. In most cases, this will be associated with addictive behavior like an alcoholic giving up on sobriety and going back to drinking. But, you can also “fall off the wagon” when trying to get a degree from a university, learning English as a foreign language, or reducing your shopping to maintain a proper budget. Anytime you quit working on anything that takes a lot of time and effort, you have “fallen off the wagon.”

@HERO_ this is a great question. During the 1920’s in the US, we experienced prohibition. All alcohol was illegal. People would make oaths and jump on water wagons and pledge to the public that they would cease using alcohol anymore. But... When they went back to their old ways, their oath was now meaningless. So people would then say, “That person fell off of the water wagon.” This was eventually shortened to “fell off the wagon.”

@HERO_ it is a unique idiom for the US. British English does not have this idiom to my knowledge.

@Scott Cecil Allen thank you for listening to mine. I listened to you many times but yes, alcoholic and budget are difficult words to pronounce. I will practice more.
