In Flanders Fields by John McCrae.

In Flanders fields the poppies

blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

This incredible poem was written during World War I. It is written from the perspective of fallen soldiers who died in the Flanders battlefields. The use of poppies in the poem refers to the poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers and later became a very famous symbol of remembrance to those who died during the war.

You could post, in contrast to In Flanders Fields, another WW1 poem, The Owl, in order to show a fuller image of how the brutal war changed and divided poetry around that time.

Lovely red poppies have grown on the blood-soaked soil! It's a great gift to those fallen soldiers who died young😔may they sleep in peace!
