Are there any readers out there? 📚✨

I usually try to read around book a week.
Of course, that depends on how busy my schedule is... and the size of the book.

This week's book is 'The Memory Police' by Yoko Ogawa.
Actually, I bought this book a few months ago, but got side-tracked by something else, so I have finally gotten around to starting it today. ✊

Has anyone read this book or anything else written by Ogawa.

(I'm cheating a little and reading the English translation) 🤫✨

When I was doing my MA and Ph.D., I was a literature major. I was doing Asian-American immigrant novels. I sometimes create a short romance novel by myself. It's been a long time since I have created the latest one. I remember maybe it was in 2019 before the COVID pandemic.

@Benedict Good question. When I was doing M.A. in the US, I was working on the mainstream discourse which is Anglo-American literature. With that being said, after having spent a couple of years, I was not 100 % satisfied with anything. No matter how Americanized my identity does or better my English skills have improved, I'm nothing but a foreigner because of my appearance, unfortunately. I am not a Caucasian who is the most powerful presence in the US. I wish I were a Caucasian. I've shifted my attention to the discourse of minorities in the US; Asian-Americans. They are like me. They are banana. Their outside is yellow as a foreigner but inside is white American. Because of my identity as a hyphenated American, I have paid more attention to them. Simultaneously, even in this country, I'm still a banana. My company is foreign-affiliated and people are coming from many different countries. English is our official language →

@Benedict → Due to my experience, I would like to put myself in their shoes. I feel more comfortable with international members. You know, most Japanese people don't have perfect English skills that are a great barrier for international members. And, vice versa with their Asian-language skills. What I am doing is like creating a bridge between different kinds of spheres like languages, cultures, and people. I'm in-between-ness and would like to embrace and respect the difference which people seem to have. That's who I am. Sorry for becoming long.

@mikachü I think the central concept was very interesting. I've found myself pondering it long after finishing the book. However, I didn't find it to be a particularly gripping read.

@Benedict it wasn’t really “gripping” as you say, but it kept me wondering abt what the next thing they’d ~lose~ was. I felt that the faster they forgot/lost things, their lives eventually degenerated and yet they weren’t sad or miserable abt it. So strange lol
