“Hit the sack” (or “hit the hay”)

If you tell

someone you’re going to “hit the sack” or to “hit the hay,” you are telling them that you are going to go to sleep for the night.

In the past, people would often make beds out of sacks filled with hay. People would then “hit the hay” or “hit the sack” in order to fluff up their makeshift mattress.
