Because people always ask:

🇲🇽/🇯🇵 + 🇩🇪(🇺🇸) = my ethnicity/race

.

“You look like....”

Thanks, but I am what I am.

My dad is only half Japanese, but he was born, raised, and lived there most of his life. I don’t have a ton of questions about Japanese culture because of that.

My mom is German-American. So yes, I’m American. Not “pretending”.

Sometimes my English is weird. That happens when one parent is not a native speaker. It also happens when you get used to hearing non-native speakers talk. Some people start mimicking unconsciously.

People should be judged not by how they looked but how they born. Japanese also tend to judge nationalities by appearance. That’s not good at all.

@lghxyt The big problem with that is that western countries are so diverse. You really can’t tell by looking. But I understand why people do.

I'm Japanese. In Japan, the word is used in the nuance of a nice person who is a great adult but never forgets his/her child's mind. I thought it was interesting because different countries have different ways of thinking.

There is no such thing as half. Your father is 100% Japanese. And if he wants to he can be 100% Mexican. Nationality is just a name, a word, a noise, a brand, a NOUN.
  • Sara 2019.11.04 09:27

    JP

@asalato He’s both. While I understand your point, he is biracial. As you know, especially while he was growing up, being biracial wasn’t always easy in Japan. And I wouldn’t take away what he identifies himself as. He has both cultures. Not 100% of one culture. He had to choose between nationalities. So did I. That doesn’t take away race or ethnicity/culture. But if you want to talk about nationality as in a passport, sure, you’re right.

@asalato I must disagree with you. There is such a thing as half because I am that. I'm biracial and very proud of my mixed ethnicity. In terms of nationality, I'm 100% of one but that in no way erases the other part of my ethnicity. Sara put it quite succinctly.

I consider my black because that's how I was raise. I always knew I was multiracial. My speaking not always right even though I was raised in US. You can't pay attention what people say. I mostly mix with African and Europe, but I also some have Asia and Middle East in me

@Seki Not really through writing unless I’ve been using a lot of Japanese. Some of my pronunciation, grammar (tenses), and accent change if I’m speaking quickly or am tired 😅 Hmm like the word “sing.” My siblings and I don’t pronounce the g so it sounds like “seen.” Or “that” becomes “dat.” (Spanish speakers sometimes can’t pronounce the ‘th’ sound :)

@Sara Thank you!!! That’s really interesting to know. I pronounce that like dat because of hip hop music influence doe lol I noticed some Mexican American people speak with an accent even though English is their first language. That answers my question 😃😃😃
