I learnt something yesterday. The climate of the Mackenzie Basin

and Mt Cook area is so harsh that the Maori people could not live here all year. The Maori people arrived 700 years ago but only came to this area in Spring and Summer to harvest food. The winds here are cold and ferocious. However, when the wind swings to the Northwest it races over the high mountains and heats up so much that suddenly the temperature shoots up high, like the Chinook winds in Canada. It got to 19 degrees for some time yesterday. It made me think, even when our lives are difficult and conditions are harsh there can be a warm wind that comes into our lives.

Just imagine wearing the Maori clothes in this environment and vast landscape.
