Idiom of the Day

“Under the table”

Some business owners may

pay their workers in cash only. This is a sign of being paid “under the table.” Some business owners do this secretly to avoid paying taxes, or to hire people illegally because the employees do not meet certain qualifications (age, proper government paperwork, etc.) Sometimes this idiom is also used for secret deals. This practice is of course not allowed, but it still happens privately. If you were being paid “under the table” in the US, you should watch out from being exploited by your boss.

The literal translation in Arabic is an idiom in Egypt which means exactly the same. In Egypt we say "تحت الترابيزة". And there's a movie with this name.
