COMMON Grammar Mistakes
(Part 2)

1. Watch, Look, See

“See

,” “look” and “watch” are often thought to be used interchangeably. However, they should be used in different situations.

The difference can be difficult to understand at first, but this might help:
* Look — you’re looking right at it, or you are looking for it.
* Look at the mess you’ve made!
* Look at me.
* I have to look for the book I lost.
* See — something has entered your sight that was not there before.
* Did you see the news today?
* I will see the doctor today.
* Watch — to look carefully, usually a moving object
* I am going to watch a movie later.
* Can you please watch the dog?

We can “see” things, some things we don’t want to see - by accident. We can only “look at” something on purpose.
*
*
2. Misplaced Pronouns

Example: Breathe in through your nose and hold it.

The singular pronoun (it) should stand in for nouns, but we can’t be sure if “it” means your breath, or your nose.

Correct: Breathe in through your nose, and hold your breath.

@Kang You’re welcome! Yes, and these differences are why we find learning each other’s languages so difficult at times.

@Jung Hwan Lee That is like “see” and “look”. We listen with purpose, and hear unintentionally. I’m listening to music. I heard what you said.
