9 Quick Facts about the Great Barrier Reef 🐠

- It is the world

’s largest reef system, with over 3000 kinds of reef, 1600 types of fish, 900 islands and stretch over 2300km across the ocean floor 🌊 (it also has a heart❤️)

- It is also roughly the size of Japan, Italy, Germany and Malaysia (Also bigger than Tasmania and Victoria, Melbourne combined!) 🌎

- The Greet Barrier Reef formed about 20 million years ago and the corals of the reef have existed for over 500 million years 👴🏻

- Voted as One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World (Located next to another Natural Wonder of the world) 🌳

-The Reef is also next to the Oldest Rainforest in the World, The Daintree Rainforest. (Also known as the Wet Tropics of Queensland) 🇦🇺

- Before the pandemic, over a million international visitors travel to see The Great Barrier Reef every year (generating over $6.4 Billion Dollars annually) ✈️

-The Great Barrier Reef can clearly be seen from Outer Space (some claim even from the moon too) 🌕

- The film ‘Finding Nemo’ was widely inspired by the Great Barrier Reef (And also Sydney) 🐠

- The Reef has been slowly dying and decking over the many years since 1995 due to climate change and the sea becoming warmer, leading to the mass decline of corals from bleaching in 2016 and 2017 😱

(Good news is the reef has been slowly recovering since the start of the 2020 Pandemic 🙏🏻✨)

@Old Uncle Matthew there are sharks but I’m sure the scuba diving areas won’t have them for safety
