2019 Book Reviews

#3 The Stranger by Albert Camus.

Does being

entirely honest justify treating people badly? Does it justify how hurt they will feel when you tell them the truth? Is honesty something to always be valued? Is there something admirable about going through life in a very passive and unattached way? These are the questions that came to me after I finished this book.

I found honesty to be the the most admirable quality of this books protagonist though I didn't find much else that drew me to him. Here we have an indifferent character. A man that doesn't shed a tear at his own mothers funeral and we have a plot that didn't engage me as much I expected to. Neither did I find the characters all that interesting. Not a bad book but not one of my favourites. Regardless, it is one that will leave you thinking and given it's status as a classic of literature, it is worth a read.

My rating 6.0/10.

⚖️☹️😊⚖️ I read that book a year ago and I'm still thinking....What regulates human actions? this is the question. Is it conscience? ethics? religion? personal interest? The organizer of these acts is the source of confusion, the source of good and evil.

Camus is my favorite novelist and philosopher at all. I love the way he delivers his philosophical thoughts through an art of piece, novel. Have you read his book The Plague? Once you read it, you wont stop until you finish it. Camus discusses absurdism and how people can live with this absurdism in this absurd world. As the novel progresses, you’ll realize that each character has a different option on how to live in an absurd world. Salute to this post! I admire it!

@Mmm Salaam, The Plague is epic! I really appreciate how Camus pointed out contingency of our life with some despair and some hope. And the Stranger (the Outsider) is quite relatable too. Who in life hasn't been an outsider once?

Thanks so much for sharing your sincere comment for which I hold the greatest respect. And, please just allow me to say something as a loyal fan of The Stranger who believes there could be tons of words underlying the lines which may take a long time to think over. I do hope this reading experience didn't ruin your interests of furtherring some new thoughts about this book, for nothing ever made it a ''classic'' except for the subtle and rigorous discussion in it about the way we face whatever comes to or awaits us in perpetuity, described wholy as absurdity in Camus's words. I consider it tremendously valuable, while genuinely hope someday you'll like to give it a second chance. By then, do forget my limited, stupid, brief piece of introduction, just reopen it and try to relate to it if you want to. Sorry for this nonsensical interruption, and good luck with your reading.
