What if I wasn’t sure how many monsters appeared? It could be one monster, but could be several monsters.

@Uma If the speaker is unsure as to whether there is one thing or many things, then the speaker would use singular. For this situation to occur, the speaker must see at least one thing obviously, but no more than one thing as to be unsure whether there are more. This means that the speaker is seeing one thing - and we use singular for that. For the use of articles with singular nouns: • 'a/an' is used for singular nouns only. • Plural nouns will either take 'the' or no article at all. "The monster appeared" "The monsters appeared" "A monster appeared "Monsters appeared" These sentences have the exact same meaning except for the plural/singular part.

@Max Thank you very much for the explanation. I think I will still be confused because the whole idea of plural and singular is something that I am not used to at all, so my intuition doesn’t work. It was good to know “if the speaker is unsure as to whether there is one thing or many things, then the speaker would use singular”. Because most of the time I am unsure..
