A casual English word you can say when talking about something

that annoys you.

“Pet Peeve”

Meaning, something that really annoys you.
Usually something small and specific.
Does not annoy most people.

You never leave dirty dishes in the sink.
You wash them immediately.
If there are dishes in the sink, you get really annoyed.
You can say:

“My pet peeve is dirty dishes in the sink.”

Meaning, dirty dishes in the sink really annoy me.

“Pet peeve” relates to a pet.
Important to you, but not important to most other people.

When I take off my shoes at home,
I like to put them in the same spot every time.
If someone puts their shoe in my spot, I get annoyed.
This is my pet peeve.

What’s your pet peeve?

Thanks for reading.

@Anurag people who force you to do things can be described as “pushy”. Casual way of describing someone who pushes you to do or say things without considering your opinion! That can be really annoying! Thanks for sharing your Pet Peeve Anurag!

@Nice That is a serious problem, really frustrating! Maybe it’s more serious than a “pet peeve”. Hope your sleep can improve. If you’re interested in English resources about improving sleep please send me a message, I’ll be happy to share some links.

Thanks for sharing! Now I understand why that character in the HP books is called like that. I suppose that my pet peeve is that I hate things that are not in orden, even in places like supermarkets, I feel the urgency to rearrange everything til it’s properly accommodated.

@Steven Pet Peeve is usually used for actions or behaviours, not specific people. If you want to say a specific action or behaviour of a person annoys you, you can say: “My Pet Peeve is people who chew loudly” “My Pet Peeve is people who walk slowly” Usually requires the action or behaviour, not only the person. Hope that makes it more clear. Thanks for the question Ben!

@Ale Marin Exactly! Peeves in Harry Potter. Oh your pet peeve is when things are not in order, you like things neat and tidy! I feel the need to rearrange my fridge or clothes, maybe it’s a little pet peeve of mine too. Thanks for sharing your Pet Peeve Ale!

@mando really clear pronunciation. Thanks for practicing together. You pronounce “pet” with a very slight “a” sound, maybe your throat is a little more open. It’s very small detail!

@Dani Great speaking Dani! Thanks for practicing together. Your pronunciation is clear. When you pronounce “annoy”, try to push the edges of your tongue to your top teeth. It makes the “oy” sound a little more clear! Keep it going!
