Do you think that Spanish is similar to English? I guess It would

be easier for a native Spanish speaker to learn English than being Arabic or chineese..

In my case, my native language is Swedish and it helped me to learn English. Swedish is a fellow Germanic language, Swedish has some vocabulary common with English (mus for “mouse”, kung for “king” Hej for Hey and puss for kiss lol), and a similar syntax structure.

Here is a small list of some words by Swedish.

Body parts: hand, fot/foot, finger, tå/toe, knä/knee, öra/ear, hår/hair, nacke/neck, skuldra/shoulder…

Domestic utensils: hus/house, kniv/knife, dörr/door, lampa/lamp, potta/pot, kittel/kettle…

Relations: fader/father, moder/mother, broder/brother, sister/syster, kusin/cousin…

Animals: svin/swin, ko/cow, höna/hen, kyckling/chicken, hund/hound, katt/cat…

Common verbs: att se/to see, att komma/to come, att vilja/to will, att fly/to flee,
att be/to beg…

So if you're native in Spanish and learning learning English, it is going to open doors for you to understand the basics of other European languages like Danish, French, Swedish, Italian, Portuguese..

Hay muchas palabras con las mismas raíces en español y en inglés. Por ejemplo todas las derivadas del latín. Muchas otras palabras modernas utilizadas en todo el mundo provienen del inglés, así que también será más fácil (por ejemplo internet, parking...)

English as so many languages mixed within that it has become something very weird. In its core it’s Germanic but it has many vocabulary that comes from french or Latin for example! It’s true though that if you know English it opens the door to many Germanic languages, and it goes the same way with Spanish and Romance languages:)

I don't think they have a lot in common... their roots are different. Spanish can help you to learn French, Italian... faster, and English other Germanic languages like German or Swedish.

@Xavi thanks mate. Very nice point of view, I'm now curious about why English is very mixed, unlike Spanish for example

I think spanish and english have some words in common but the pronunciation of certain letters and the structure of the sentences are completely different, we have to remember that spanish is a romance language so spanish help to learn others romance languages in change english it's useful for germanic languages

@Hugo I think it’s because first it got mixed with old norse, as Anglo Saxon and old Norse was quite similar and the vikings invaded part of the British isles. Later in the Middle Ages Latin influenced a lot other languages as it had been the lingua franca of the Roman Empire, and french because it also became the lingua franca before English nowadays. On the other hand Spanish comes directly from Latin, it became a language in its own quite early, it was influenced by basque and Arabic and later became standardised (quite early). Because of that early standardisation (1492) Spanish has not changed that much ever since:)

Spanish is not in the same language family as English, but it's one of the languages that's been paired the most with English for historical, cultural, even economic reasons. Yet how easy it is for a Spanish speaker to learn English will depend on their access to the media and their own interest in learning another language. Spanish is an international language, too, and Spanish speakers are used to the fact that everyone in miles around speak the same language
