A tip for my fellow English learners. When someone is speaking

to you and you didn’t hear what they said please don’t respond with “What?” It’s so rude and doesn’t sound very nice. Instead please say “Sorry?” or “I didn’t catch that” or “can you repeat that please?” I just find is so rude when someone says “What”

What about "Pardon"? We used to be taught to respond this word in the textbooks. But I seldom hear anyone say it. Can you tell me why?
