English concept:
I see a lot of Japanese people writing about

their part-time jobs.

English speakers do not designate whether it is a full-time or part-time job when discussing their jobs.

For example, someone might say, “I went to my job today.”

⚡️They will never say I went to my part-time job today.⚡️

Isn't it because of cultural differences rather than languages? In Japan, social status can be distinguished to some extent just by saying part-timers.

@Chatarow perhaps. I have no idea. I can only assume it is just that: that your country distinguishes, so you are translating literally?

@ジジ Gigi Yeah, I used Google translation. Well, I mean, speaking of part-timers in Japan, It almost means married women.

@ジジ Gigi Yeah, I’m afraid so. Japan is not gender-equal and I think that’s why the marriage rate is declining.

@Chatarow I first started learning Japanese when I was 30, so that’s 32 years ago, and I was learning because my neighbors were Japanese housewives here in America. They wanted help with their English. And they were definitely stuck at home, unable to get work visas, and wanting to get out of the house, so they joined me in teaching Japanese at the school. I got paid but they did it but they got out of the house. They were great to me so I’ve always had a great fondness for Japanese women. But it was obvious then that they were 30 years behind us. I would think 32 years later something might’ve changed… Hopefully, it has.

@ジジ Gigi Thank you for your information. I think it’s natural that some countries are more advanced than others, and vice versa.

I guess they translated words literally as you said:) I also think there are cultural differences between us. It's good to know you don't have to tell how you work when you talk about it in English. Unfortunately, there are big differences between a part time worker and a full time worker in Japan. For example, salary, bonus, severance pay and responsibilities. Even though I work like a full time worker. If I talk about my work in Japanese, I definitely tell them I'm a part time worker and It's common. I hope Japanese society will become more comfortable for ladies😊

@ジジ Gigi Thank you too! It's getting much better than decades ago. But we are still decade behind you. I believe it's really good for young Japanese to know those differences and change the society better for the next generation😊

@Ai yes. It is sad we have to fight for what is natural. But there were reasons our ancestors believed the way they did. We cannot fault then for seeing the world their way.

@ジジ Gigi I agree with you. The society ancestors lived was completely different from nowadays. I can't complain about it because they always must have chosen the right way for them. The world is changing. So I think we just need to adjust flexibly to it.😊
