‼️⚠️ IDENTIFYING FAKE ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKERS ⚠️‼️

There are

so many people on this app who claim they're native or fluent in English when they're clearly not. It's deeply irresponsible of them to mislead and confuse people who genuinely want to improve their English language skills.

I saw a post the other day written by a girl from India and even though her tips were 90% wrong, many beginners were thanking her for her help! 😵 I've also seen non-native speakers make corrections that were obviously incorrect.

⚠️‼️ WHAT TO LOOK FOR ⚠️‼️

🔹️ Poor grammar in their bio

🔹️ They make the same grammatical mistakes as you

🔹️ When you ask people to correct you and they say your writing is good/perfect (but then you find other people correcting your mistakes).

🔹️ They aren't able to re-word your sentences (I can guarantee you that almost all non-native/fluent speakers won't be able to do this. This suggests that they have a poor command of the language, have trouble naturally thinking in that language, and have not had enough conversations with other native speakers to be able to say or explain something in multiple ways.)

🔹️ They remove or add unnecessary words to their sentences, e.g., is, in, the. Example: I live in US ❌ vs. I live in *the* US ✅

🔹️ They remove or add unnecessary s' to the end of a word, e.g. peoples, let's talks, I like to watch drama ❌ vs. I like to watch dramas ✅

🔹️ When you ask for a definition and they give you the dictionary definition. (Native speakers should be able to define a word simply and give you examples. The only exception I see with this is when it comes to definitions of technical or advanced words that most people wouldn't use on a daily basis--acquiesce, mercurial, rebutted, etc.)

🔹️ They add spaces between words and punctuation marks:

- hi , my name is ___.
- Hello . i can teach you english.

🔹️ They make capitalization errors:

- Hi, My name is ___ and I want to learn ___. i can teach you English.

Long story short ➡️ Just because someone can set their native language to English, it doesn't mean that they have a good grasp or control of the language!! Please be careful and make an effort to improve the quality of your learning experience by seeking help from real native speakers. People from Canada, the US, Australia, and the UK are likely all native. ❗❗Of course, this isn't to say that you shouldn't be talking to English speakers from other countries!! There are people in other countries who are truly fluent in English and would be able to provide you with a good learning experience. You just need to be careful and choose your language partners wisely.

@Susan this is kind of a difficult thing. For example, my English level according to IELTS is C1 but I still catch myself sometimes doing small grammar mistakes in English. So basically it would mean that non-native English speakers should not give advice at all. I’ve been thinking about it often when I correct people, but then I still give advice thinking that if their level is A1-B1, still better that someone with higher level corrects them. But do you think it would be better to just not do it?

But Indians speak English better than me. Sometimes it seems that there are people who have the language skills suitable for C2. However, it seems that English should be learned from someone who is a native speaker or has a C2 level certificate that complies with it 😵‍💫

@pp My English level is also between B2 and C1. People below C2 should not teach English

@Cheyeon Ok sure, I understand the consensus here. I’ll refrain myself from doing the corrections here in the future

@Kaite Indians are often studying in English since primary school (and some other countries as well like singaporeans). So they have their own dialects of English and use different words than US or UK english
