Weekend mood on 🐊
Crocodiles are one of the only animals that
survived the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaur population around 240 million years ago. They can be found on all inhabited continents except for Europe (hence why Sweden is such a great country to live in)... There are 23 different species, and crocodiles are the largest and the heaviest of reptiles.
Size, weight and everything else for that matter differ among species. The biggest ones are the saltwater crocodiles that can grow up to 6,17 meters and can weigh over a ton. All of the species are more or less cold-blooded animals with one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom. Even with a strong bite the jaws are weak and very sensitive. Crocodiles eat without chewing and in order to digest they have to swallow stones..
Speaking of eating; whilst eating the crocodiles swallow too much air that makes the glands produce tears that then will flow. Don’t mistake the tears for crying. This false crying is the inspiration for the term “Crocodile tears”.
Crocodiles have a lifespan of at least 30-40 years, for the larger ones the average is 60-70 years. Their night vision is very good and thanks to an extra aorta they can control the blood flow around their body. Because they don’t sweat they open their mouths to release heat.
Last but not least; Did you know that the temperature of the nest when laying the eggs will determine if the babies are boys or girls? For temperatures less than 32 degrees Celsius it will be girls and everthing over that temperature will result in having boys.
Enjoy your weekend!
