Some things
are very expensive. Perhaps you want to save up for a trip to visit the United States. It will likely take you a long time to save up for this trip. If that is the case, “it will cost you an arm and a leg” to make this trip. The meaning of this saying is that you are having to sell your arm and your leg in order to go on your trip, or to make an expensive purchase. We in America can also joke that, “Maybe I should just sell a kidney” to afford to do something.
