“Went to hell in a hand basket”

Have you ever

been working on a project or a plan, and everything fell apart? For example, let’s say you are planning for a birthday party. Perhaps the restaurant made a mistake on your order and it got switched with another customer. On the birthday cake, they wrote the wrong name. More guests showed up than you anticipated. And then it rained. This would be an example where the birthday party “went to hell in a hand basket.”

In short, the idiom means everything goes to ruin rapidly, or the situation becomes a great disaster.
