Idiom of the Day

“Third Wheel”

Have you ever wanted to hang

out with someone special, just the two of you... and then someone unexpectedly “tags along” or joins you without asking? They are being “a third wheel.” (People like this are SO annoying!)

Anyone who is part of a group who is not really invited or wanted to be there is a third wheel. It is like having a bicycle with an extra wheel. We used to say “fifth wheel” in reference to a car having an extra wheel, but as culture changes, so does language. 😊

“Caroline met Scott at the mall to get to know each other better. When Tiffany saw them, she joined them as a third wheel.”

Thanks a lot 🌹 If you don't mind me asking.. Why don't you put (a) before the word (part) in the sentence (... Who is part of a group....) This confuses me 🥺

@Mohammed hussein I think for Americans, we would perhaps misunderstand “apart” with “a part.” Apart would mean “separate,” so it may cause some confusion. Also, American English is what I would call “dirty English.” We do not really follow all of the proper rules of grammar like people from England. We just don’t care I guess - we are independent. 😂😂

@clo it is never positive, but you can still say it with poise and manners. “Well you two, it feels like I’m a third wheel right now, so I am going to head home and let you two enjoy your time together. Take care. I’ll message you guys later.”

@hope Your voice is very cute. Hahaha. 😊 It is like you are speaking as a cartoon mother. I do not mean this negatively. I think it is because I definitely hear a mix between Arabic and French in your voice. It sort of reminds me of a cartoon character’s voice I heard when I was young. Your pronunciation is done very well. I can understand all that you are saying.

@Nor it is not a negative statement at all. I am saying that your accent will probably be hard to remove. Your English is quite good and very understandable. I think you are at a point in your English where it will take you very specific practice to try to remove your accent to sound “more native.” I think foreigners would have an easy time understanding you.

@Scott Cecil Allen thank you so much. for saying that you understood all of my reading, happy to hear that, because most of the time I feel that my pronunciation is wrong and so awkward as my voice seems strange to me as well to you. But I know I can enhance the whole thing insha Allah, I can do it. I will get improvement.
