We all should proud of ourselves and also appreciate opportunities to ensure our humility, shouldn’t we? And I think we can all relate to misinterpreting someone else’s words and being overly defensive. Because sometimes people really are being offensive! And we dont want to put up with that. In my eyes, bambou’s comment seems totally lighthearted, most likely a phrase common to his tribe in his life. I would guess that in your tribe in your life, you have not heard such a comment said in that way before. Hope everyone is doing well

    CN

@Joseph great, so if someone comments that on your post, you can comment that. And I’ll comment what I want on my post. I found it rude and offensive. I have many, many flaws and honestly would change pretty much everything about myself, however my one proud achievement is that I have spent 5 years studying day and night, hours and hours a day to chinese the grades I did. Anyone who knows anything about university knows above 80%+ is a publishable level and 98% is ridiculous and basically unachievable. His comment was unnecessary and backhanded. I don’t require any input and I am sad that I have to justify my own upset on a comment on my post, about my life.
  • Joseph 2020.09.22 22:38

    EN
    CN

@Milly I think one of the first rules about sharing pieces of your life on social media is to know very well that other people and what they say has nothing to do with you. I’m sure you have heard about the many sad people that are sad as a result of engaging with people on social media. So I think if one is surprised by receiving input and opposition and annoying things, etc. through their social media, then they should definitely know that posting to public social media gives way to lots of undesirable things, and there are many ways to block people, etc. and sometimes it just sucks anyway. By the way, if you assume that he also knows that 98% would be a ridiculously high score and basically unachievable, then where is the backhandedness? Anyway, I’m not trying to make you feel worse or prove something to myself. I am just someone who is compelled to try to ease things like that when I see these kinds of conflicts.
  • Joseph 2020.09.22 22:41

    EN
    CN

@Milly Also I want to say that that is a reasonable explanation! Maybe you did not want to share the explanation, and did not want to encounter the need to do so. But I personally appreciate it
  • Milly 2020.09.22 22:42

@Joseph there is no conflict here, this was posted 2 weeks ago and you reignited conflict
  • Joseph 2020.09.22 22:43

    CN

@Milly And maybe when anyone goes back and sees this then the conflict is reignited in their mind too?
  • Milly 2020.09.22 22:46

    EN
    CN

Anyway, I’m very well aware that people comment unnecessary things on social media, and I am also very aware of my right to have a voice if I feel that someone has been unjust to me. There is no conflict here, I disagreed with his comment and found it rude and demeaning, he apologised. End of discussion. It’s nice to know you scrolled down my feed, read the comments, disagreed with me for the way I stood up for myself, imagined yourself in this situation hypothetically and created a more suitable, morally superior hypothetical reaction and then felt the need to notify me about this more morally suitable reaction. It’s not at all paradoxical that you lectured me about humility but at the same time felt the need to input your morally superior reaction on a 2 week old post with no new comments in a bid to “ease conflict”
  • Joseph 2020.09.22 22:56

    EN
    CN

@Milly Yeah the conflict was more or less resolved. But i wanted to try my hand at explaining what he may have meant more, and see what happened. I tried to talk about how people can of course be genuinely offensive and so people shouldn’t put up with that. But I agree, I didn’t highlight or appreciate that aspect enough.
  • Joseph 2020.09.22 22:57

    EN
    CN

@Milly I also wanted to express that my example of what I would say was not meant to be what you should say. I had the opinion that there is a more lighthearted way to receive and reply to a comment like that. However, I could never require you to have a similar opinion, and I don’t want to do so. Maybe after you express yourself I agree with you more than I agreed with myself, I can not know. Anyway, I appreciate this comment, impressive arguments! I will do more reflecting about these points
  • Milly 2020.09.22 23:03

    EN
    CN

@Joseph this is my post, about my life, and I found his comment very cutting and upsetting. I expressed that to him and he apologised. You scrolled down to a two week old, resolved post and lectured me about humility before inputting your disagreement with my comments and your version of a better “more light hearted” comment. This is paradoxical and serves no role in easing any form of none-existent conflict.
  • Joseph 2020.09.23 00:23

    EN
    CN

@Milly What I am seeing is he explains himself more by saying his comment was more of a compliment. And you reply to further explain your view that suggesting you could have gotten a 98% is diminishing your accomplishment. Are these not the last two comments? Sometimes the comments jump around so I am not sure. I appreciate the challenge, but I think my views of humility have been consistent. I intended to ask if it is agreeable that we should be glad about an opportunity to ensure our humility, amidst our being proud and satisfied with ourselves.
  • Joseph 2020.09.23 00:25

    EN
    CN

@Milly I have suggested improvements while maintaining a view that I do not need to be wholly convinced of my opinion, it is free to be changed through other ideas, and I don’t intend to be too forceful or proud of my opinions and suggestions. So it seems to me that I am allowing myself to have pride while also honestly considering offered criticisms. I don’t see the paradox, but I don’t doubt that there may be more there than I have just suggested. I saw the little numbers by the comments but I did not know how far away those dates are from the current date, nor did I think about how that would apply to your and user bambou’s experience. So I fully accept your criticism of adding to a two week old situation. And my lack of insight here is telling of my flaws!
  • Joseph 2020.09.23 00:28

@Milly I wasn’t careful with my words there. I meant you also explain yourself more. I did not mean that you further explain that specific view

@Joseph Actually I don't really understand the meaning of what Milly said :" Master's grade and achieved 86% overall" In fact, I thought the :"achieved 86% overall" means like school marks. I mean I thought 86% is a good marks. We always talk to students that he could do better than he did, so when I said she could get 98%, I would like to mention she could do some better good marks. I don't know if you know what I mean.

@Milly Well if you thought I'm very rude, I think we don't need continuing to challenge, because we haven't the same custom nor the same mentally. In China, we always talk to children/students : "you could do better than you did" that isn't to humiliate him but encouraging him and proud of him.
