Here’s my first experience of racism in Canada:
I was at a Tim
Horton’s (Canadian coffee chain) beside my university with my Vietnamese Canadian friend. We were speaking English together, and mind you she and I are native English speakers and were born in Canada. Suddenly an old white woman approached us and shouted “Go back to your home country!” I looked at her and said, “My home country is here, Canada!” She then told me, “Then learn some English!” And I said, “What language do you think I’m using now?”
Anyways, she walked away and the guy sitting nearby us bursted out laughing after she left. My friend and I laughed too. ☺
Racism is everywhere. I just hope we all handle it well and do not fall to their level.
