    That’s because a lot of people don’t know what’s the definition of conversation. They just say hi or give a wave then wait for the another person says or ask something to continue it. To me, ask “How are you?” to start a conversation is a good and polite thing when you don’t know each other and that’s what parents and teachers teach. If it’s not, then why “greeting” is exist? If you don’t say that, what else do you wanna say in the first message? “Hey, you’re sexy.”, “Let’s meet!”, “What’s your job?”, “Where do you live?”, “Why do you wanna learn Chinese?”, or what? Of course, some people just keep asking you “How are you?” one time every day after you already answer them “I’m good. How about you?” and they answer it, too. Then, they ask “How are you?” the next day again. Some of them would just disappear and some would complain that why the another person has to keep asking questions. Why? “That’s because you don’t say anything to continue the conversation ya!”
