I get asked about American current and political events all the

time . It’s a huge double standard that I can’t ask the same about Chinese current events. It doesn’t make sense to me .
Telling me it’s not my business Is kind of rude. My motive is just to learn.

Like many Americans, in my experience many Chinese are quite naive and misinformed about world affairs, however it is heightened because of a lack of free press, internet restrictions and a face-saving culture. I almost always avoid discussing politics with them. Just my $.02.

@Nicole Do you have experience in other countries talking politics? It’s actually popular in Europe and the America’s . When I lived in the Middle East it was a topic of discussion everyday . I think the most confusing thing for me is the amount of political questions I get asked everyday by Chinese citizens.

From what I can tell, politics is more of a ‘sensitive’ subject to most Chinese people (I say “most” because it still depends a lot on individual person) compared to westerners. Generally speaking it’s not something people would casually talk about over their dinner table (people do have strong opinions about it tho, as I’m sure you can tell 🙊). I’m actually quite surprised that you get asked about political events a lot on here.

If you are really interested in learning about views on politics, you are advised to know better about the person before you ask. Discussion with a well-read or well-educated person makes a difference.

  • Lindsay 2019.07.02 02:07

I agree with what Joseph says. Due to internet restrictions and the press, many Chinese people lack access to the knowledge of outside world. Through the press, we see what government want us to see. Some people noticed this so they are curious about foreigners’ opinion, that’s why they ask you those questions. But some don’t even care about those events, so they don’t want to talk about it. I suggest you talk with people who ask you about political events and you can ask them back. Or you can ask people who are more open minded.

@Micah 米嘉德 oh well 🤷‍♀️ I agree with the other comment tho. Since this’s only a language learning app anyway, just don’t bring up any political topics until the other person expresses interest in it. This should, hopefully, save you some time and energy from unnecessary argument.
