Idiom of the Day

“In the nick of time”

This idiom is especially

for all of you procrastinators out there. Have you ever put off a deadline for paperwork to the very last day (maybe to the very last hour)? Or you arrived at a store to buy something right before they closed? Then you have made it “in the nick of time.” Think of this idiom as the last moment before it is too late or past expiration.

“Joe turned in his taxes to the government in the nick of time. If he turned them in an hour later, he would have paid a penalty.”

@Float pomelo you are doing very well! Something I want you to work on to make sure your pronunciation is right. Make sure you use the soft “I” sound, not the soft “E” sound. The way you are pronouncing it makes the word “neck” instead of “nick.”

@Мукадус Малик Very good! Your English is very well developed. It is easy to understand you. One small mistake that I caught - “procrastinator__s__”. Make sure you add the “S” sound at the end for plural procrastinators. I am sure there is more than one procrastinator in the world. 😊😂

@Kawther In American English, we do not mind accents. We really don’t care. In some cases, it is even a benefit. Some men and women are attracted to those with a foreign accent. And American English is what I call a “dirty English.” It is not “proper” like British English. In the US, if it is close, it counts. 😂😂 But that may also be why sometimes it is difficult to learn, because we change the rules. 😂😂

@Amira Ebrahim You are reading well, and I can understand you. Your accent is a little heavy, but I am sure this will improve with practice. One item you can work on is the “th” sound. I know this video is for children, but she does a good job explaining how to make this sound. This will help you a little with your accent on some words. https://youtu.be/SVOnAI8ktKY

@Scott Cecil Allen Thank you for the evaluation and comment. It’s true I was pronouncing that differently even though I knew what “neck” meant but I assumed they sounded similar. Another thing that I’ll try to keep working on and it ties to this, as it is about idioms, is the use of expressions in my convos. I don’t seem to remember them when talking and sometimes I feel they might not sound natural.

@Scott Cecil Allen thank you so much for your feedback and your help. Yes I have to practice as much as I can to improve all the skills of English. I have to push myself to achieve daily improvement, I know that will never happen in a blink of an eye, it will take a lot of effort and time to get. Thanks for your advice.

@Taghreed It takes time to learn new things. Do not stress yourself out. 😊 I am sure you will have moments that come up in your life and you will think, “I know this one!!” Even if you don’t remember it 100%, it will still be there in your mind. Keep practicing. You’ll get there. 😊

@Scott Cecil Allen Thank you! You’re such a positive teacher and I think this translates to how much people are welcoming of your critiques and assessments. I hope I do. Sometimes if I knew the person is a native speaker, I’d feel like they might find this use archaic like it’s not natural and I’m forcing it. So, I think my solution is to try to find more speaking buddies.

This one was very difficult for me because of the words “procrastinators”, “paperwork” and “governament”. Thank you for helping us practice! 👍🏽✨
