Hello! I’m Drew, from Australia.
I have had a few people ask
me about Australian Slang, so i’m making a list to help anyone who might be curious 😊 Mate - This means friend, most of the time. But strangers can call each other mate as a form of mutual respect. Usually you say this to men, and not women.
Example: You are looking for the Bread in a supermarket, so you approach an employee who is stacking shelves. “Excuse me, mate. Where would I find the bread aisle?”
Arvo - This is a casual way to say ‘Afternoon’
Bottle-O - This means ‘Liquor Shop’ or a place to buy alcohol.
Brekky - This means breakfast!
Maccas - Mcdonalds
Esky - This means ‘Cooler’ as in a portable cooler.
Bogan - A rude, impolite person. Usually with a thick Australian accent. This is an insult.
No worries - ‘No problem’ ‘Don’t mention it’
Servo - This means service station, or gas station.
Tea - This means ‘Dinner’. (Example: “Tea’s ready!” “What did you have for tea last night?”
Bloody - This is a way to emphasise something. Used in the same context of the F word. This is a generally tame word, but is still considered a curse word amongst many people, especially older generations.
There are plenty more slang words to learn if you are moving or travelling to Australia! If you would like to learn more, send me a message! I’d be happy to help translate 😊😊
Have a good night!
