How important was it / is it for your parents to approve of your

relationship?

When I was younger, having my parents’ approval was a blessing. But honestly, my parents did not have much say in who I dated or who I married. Americans tend to be quite independent and will marry who they want despite any objections the parents may have. Of course my parents’ opinion mattered. But they would be powerless to stop me from marrying whom I wanted.

How is this situation like in your culture?

We can't get married without our parents approval. If we did, they wouldn't talk to us ever again. It's a war to be honest

Actually it’s a very interesting question, I think in our culture, most of people would prefer to get our parents’ approval in general, but of course there are people they have the say on who they want to be with no matter what their parents think . But you know for parents, they also want their sons to marry a girl who is elevated and cultivated , want their daughters to marry a man with good sense of responsibility and can offer their precious daughter a stable life and stuff . Parents have been through a marriage already, so they may concern more about How can you live happily afterwards, wether my child married a right person. Can the two combined families get along with each other? because getting married is way different then dating . I think parents do have a call on who you will marry, ask them reasons and reflect on their opinions. if u still disagree with their thoughts, you can explain .

I believe that parents all want their children to have a happy life , if you said to them “ I will never live happily with him or her “ I guess every parent would agree with you marrying him or her eventually!

I think parents are the same all over the world But the degree to which they express their opinions and will And the degree to which we accept their will differ. But how would we act as a parent toward our children's future?

It's not the culture only it's returned to the mentality of our families and parents for my side I don't have an problem I can get merried with anyone I'm quite independent to choose but my dad's opinion is important for me, if he says that he is not the right one for you I will finish this relation

It's pretty much the same here in Germany. I really appreciated that my parents didn't contradict my partner(s), even when they were not convinced of him. As a mother of two girls of a marriageable age I sometimes wished I would have a say in the matter 🤣

@elinora as a parent, I ponder this idea.

Also for parents , I don’t like some stereotypes that if you don’t listen to me about your marriage, I am not talking to you anymore, don’t go into the house anymore . I think if you raise a child you should develop their own ability of making decisions for themselves, instead of listing to you all around . To build up their own creative and rational mind . So when they grow up , they can choose their partner wisely , then you will not be worried anymore !!! Sometimes the best thing in the world is support , especially from our dearest families

In my country parents approval is very important but the marrige just like you in America can happen without their approval and I can say finally they will accept it after a period of time depend on the situation. It's really complicated that period of the parents disapproval.

@Scott Cecil Allen so parents feel different. And our experiences in life affect our decisions. But I think parents always want the best and easiest thing in life for their children, and that doesn't mean that their ideas are always true or always false.

What is important is the right choice because marrige is a big responsibilty. It's not the happening of marrige that is important but rather how does it lasts happily.

It's opposite in India. Mostly parents decide whom you will marry with haha, but new generation wants to be independent while choosing their life partners and I agree with them because it's the biggest decision of someone's life. So I hope parents will not interfere too much in their children's life.
