Idiom of the Day

A stone’s throw

If something is “a stone’s

throw away,” it means that it is close by. If you can imagine picking up a rock and throwing it as far as you can, that is how close it is. We have, over time, exaggerated this meaning a bit, but the intended purpose is to express how close something is. The origin of this idiom is as old as the Bible. Luke 22:41 uses this idiom from 2000 years ago, suggesting that the origin is older still.
