The Deserted Village
Achill Island, Ireland. 🍀

The site dates

back 5,000 years however the last settlers left the village as a result of the 1845-1849 famine and emigration throughout the successive years. There are approximately 100 houses deserted in the village.

@Andrey it was a village that was forced to leave because of famine...many would have went to the workhouses or emigrated on coffin ships to the USA or Canada.

It's sad. May be this village has own unique history, but I think it is kind of global process (migration from village to city).

@Paul_Titov yes, many were. The population dropped significantly and since then never recovered to that level again.
