another contribution to my summer camping trip journal (Day 4), Part 11:

Still in Ouray, Colorado, we visited Box Falls, a small waterfall in a very narrow canyon. We hiked around above town, the views are outstanding. Finally, we got back to the car and then decided to indulge in a pizza lunch, followed by ice cream and coffee. It was a return visit to a pizza restaurant where we had dined several years earlier during the last visit. We had great memories and were not disappointed, it was pretty excellent. I captured an image of a mural on main street very much reminiscent of an Alphonse Mucha painting. Mucha is one of my favorite painters and a fellow Czech. 😀

Having our hunger satisfied, we embarked on the drive to our last camping spot. This took us to the Million Dollar Highway. Steep cliffs and magnificent views abound as you make your way up to Red Mountain Pass (3,358 m). The name refers to how much it cost to build and today it is still one of the most dangerous highways in the state, especially in winter time. It is billed as one of the most scenic drives in the USA.

You can see many remains and tailings from the mining days. The colors are certainly striking. We were very lucky on that day and drove almost the entire route in beautiful sunshine with a partly cloudy sky providing a marvellous backdrop.
