영어 면접 답변을 여러 번 외웠는데도 질문 표현이 조금만 달라지면 말이 막힐 수 있습니다. 모든 질문의 모범 답안을 준비하는 것보다 필요한 것은 질문을 확인하고, 잠깐 생각한 뒤, 내가 실제로 겪은 일에서 답을 고르는 연습입니다.

언어 교환 상대는 채용 담당자가 아닙니다. 직무에 맞는 정답을 평가해 달라고 하기보다 질문의 뜻을 확인하고, 내 말로 답하고, 이어지는 질문에도 반응하는 회화 연습을 부탁하는 것이 좋습니다.

## 이해하지 못한 채 답을 시작하지 마세요

예상 밖의 질문을 받으면 바로 긴 답을 만들려 하지 말고 무엇을 묻는지부터 확인합니다.

- `Could you clarify what you mean by ...?`

- `Are you asking about ...?`

- `Would you mind repeating the last part?`

예를 들어 `Tell me about a time you handled a difficult situation.`이라는 질문이 고객 문제인지 팀 안의 갈등인지 모호하다면 `Would you like an example involving a customer or my team?`이라고 확인할 수 있습니다.

## 생각할 시간이 필요하다는 것을 숨기지 않아도 됩니다

질문은 이해했지만 바로 사례가 떠오르지 않을 때가 있습니다. 이때 침묵하는 대신 짧은 문장으로 시간을 만들 수 있습니다.

- `Let me think of the most relevant example.`

- `That's a good question. I'd like a moment to think.`

- `One example that comes to mind is ...`

이 표현들이 답변은 아닙니다. 몇 초 동안 어떤 경험을 꺼낼지 정하는 연결 문장입니다. 연습 상대에게 질문 직후 힌트를 주지 말고 잠시 기다려 달라고 부탁하면 실제 면접과 비슷한 간격을 경험할 수 있습니다.

## 하나의 경험을 서로 다른 질문에 맞춰 말해 보세요

면접용 경험을 늘리기 위해 가상의 성과를 만들 필요는 없습니다. 실제 경험 하나를 고르고 다음 네 가지만 메모합니다.

1. 어떤 상황이었는지

2. 내게 무엇이 요구되었는지

3. 내가 무엇을 했는지

4. 결과와 지금 다시 한다면 바꾸고 싶은 점

그다음 연습 상대에게 질문 방식을 바꿔 달라고 합니다.

- `Tell me about a challenge you faced.`

- `What did you do when your original plan did not work?`

- `What would you do differently next time?`

같은 경험이라도 첫 질문에는 상황을, 두 번째 질문에는 판단을, 마지막 질문에는 배운 점을 중심으로 답합니다. 외운 영어 문장을 재생하는 대신 질문에 맞춰 정보를 고르는 연습이 됩니다.

## 피드백은 두 종류로 나눠 받으세요

연습이 끝난 뒤 “어땠어요?”라고만 물으면 상대도 무엇을 말해야 할지 어렵습니다. 확인하고 싶은 내용을 나눠서 요청하세요.

영어 표현에 대해서는 이야기 순서를 이해할 수 있었는지, 어색한 표현이 있었는지, 되묻는 방식이 정중했는지를 영어 사용자에게 물을 수 있습니다. 반면 답변이 지원 직무에 적합한지, 성과 설명에 어떤 정보가 더 필요한지는 해당 업계나 채용 과정을 아는 사람에게 확인하는 편이 정확합니다.

실제 회사 이름, 고객 정보, 내부 수치처럼 공개할 수 없는 내용은 연습 상대에게 보내지 마세요. 고유명사와 수치를 일반적인 표현으로 바꿔도 답변의 흐름은 충분히 연습할 수 있습니다.

## 마지막에는 예고하지 않은 추가 질문을 하나 받아 보세요

문자로 확인 문장을 만들고 음성 메시지로 답할 수 있게 되었다면 짧은 통화로 이어 갈 수 있습니다. 처음부터 30분짜리 모의 면접을 부탁할 필요는 없습니다. 질문 하나를 고르고, 답변 뒤에 예고하지 않은 추가 질문을 하나만 해 달라고 요청하세요.

예상 밖의 질문에 강해진다는 것은 무엇을 물어도 유창하게 답한다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 모르는 부분을 확인하고, 생각할 시간을 만들고, 내가 가진 경험에서 필요한 정보를 선택할 수 있다는 뜻입니다.
