I remember that after attending my university classes and skipping any hangouts with my friends, I would drive as soon as possible to the tutoring center, eager to listen to their stories about their day—because I knew these children were waiting for me, for an adult to listen to them. I was always excited to share with them any knowledge I had, even if it was the slightest. They would look at me as if I had just performed a miracle when I answered a question they couldn’t solve. Some of them would drive me up the wall, but that’s just part of the cycle and a way children express themselves without thinking about the consequences—unless guided by an adult. It was mad work, but worth it. 😂 I remember teaching an elementary student from zero to hero; she was so proud of herself when she passed her first Maths examination with everything I had taught her. I was proud of her too—it was a long journey for her to reach that stage. I couldn’t find any copies online, and it wasn’t available in the state library, let alone the university library. I remember, in the middle of the night, shedding a few tears while typing and citing. Every academic journal I read, along with Amnesty International reports, kept repeating the same words: “inhumane treatment,” “apartheid,” “denied access.” It was truly an emotional journey as I tried to dig deeper and understand both sides from an academic perspective—without letting my identity as a Muslim cloud my objectivity. All I could think was, “This is their land. It never belonged to them in the first place. Why is the world turning a blind eye and accepting this? They’re settling illegally!” After finally submitting my thesis before the end of my last semester, I remember my lecturer praising me for producing a strong paper without letting my emotions affect the academic rigor and marking criteria. He knew it was tough work—and we both knew it. Now, I finally have the chance to read this. Sometimes, I even took catering orders for small family and friends’ events— but I hated doing the cleaning 😵‍💫 I love cooking because it’s one of my favorite things to do, as it’s how I convey my affection without saying anything.
