In my textbook they use pinyin less and less. It seems that they want you to know the characters without the aid of pinyin. What??? I can’t understand any of it without pinyin. I am familiar with the variants of the characters but how are you able to guess them correctly? The process of learning Chinese for me is as follows: Listening activities combined with writing the pinyin sounds with tone markers. Later I will read and write and introduce myself to the characters to match the pinyin. Much later I use flash cards to connect the pinyin (the sounds they make) to the Chinese character. In my opinion this is the most challenging part of learning Chinese. Writing the characters, memorising the strokes. Honestly I don’t understand how you can read handwritten form for the characters. Tragic to pass on so young. I have only just started listening to him as part of my self study for Chinese. He had a great voice and I will continue listening to more of his songs.
